Last night- Time to go home!

Hola!

Last night in Spain!!

For the second half of Spanish class we learned some flamenco moves, which was both fun and hilarious to watch. The advanced professor is an actual flamenco dancer, so she was very impressive, and much more elegant than any of us students.

Went around all of Toledo today, buying all the presents that I meant to buy ages ago, but being me, did not until the last moment. Luckily I managed to find everything I was looking for, at least for the most part.

Now that it is almost midnight, almost time to think about packing!

Hasta pronto!!!

The last weekend (check!)

Hola todos,

The last weekend in Spain, and it's over!

Friday we took our Spanish finals, even though we have Spanish classes up until Tuesday, and I'm hoping they went not too badly. Studying the irregular verb tenses, I found they came back to me much quicker this time, having already learned them once. Now if only I used them in the correct way, I will be all set!

Our two professors that came with us on the trip left for the US on Saturday, so my Global Healthcare class is already over. We already got our final grades for the class, and I got a 96. I was one of the underachievers in the class too, which should tell you something about the difficulty level.

We did learn, however, in our final healthcare class, that Spain has not had this much rain during this time period since 1906. I thought this was pretty telling about our luck with the weather here!

Friday night we went out dancing, and then slept for a good portion of Saturday morning (read: ALL of Saturday morning). The rest of the day was spent shopping, and eating. We found a place that makes a really good cheeseburger, though it is obviously not a replacement for the food we are all missing from home. Stores started shutting down around 9, so while we did get some shopping done, there is still plenty more ahead of us in the next 2 days.

Sunday has truly been the day of rest. Slept for a long while, finished some homework, made instant soup, organized a tiny portion of stuff to bring back, and watched a few random fireworks out one of our friend's windows.

Tomorrow we're off to the Arab baths! Brynna and I have been thinking about them ever since we left the ones in Granada, so we are incredibly excited for tomorrow!! This time we're bringing along a few more people so that they can revel in the experience as well. Hopefully the Madrid ones are just as good, if not better. After the baths, I think we're going to wander around Madrid for a bit, and treat ourselves to a really good dinner since it's our last night before we have to start the horrible packing to leave process.

Tuesday will be the last day of classes, going to the outdoor mercadillo (tan barato) otra vez, and packing up all the stuff I've managed to accumulate over the past 5 weeks.

Finally, before I forget to post it again, this is a picture of the palacio in Madrid that I took while Brynna and I were with her Spanish family.

Almost time to say adios to Espaa!

Hasta luego!

Another week in Spain

Hola,

Another week gone! In 20 minutes (Spain time) there will be a week left until I return to the US.

Last week had a few highlights. I got to learn more about the Spanish health care system, but not through the class, through first hand experience. My throat was hurting, and it got a bit worse over a few days. I webmd-ed my symptoms, and decided that it was probably strep. I was going to talk to my professors, but both of them had left for the weekend and were unreachable. So, with only the self-diagnosis I decided to venture out for drugs, since Amoxicillin is over the counter here.

I wrote down about 5 ways to say "strep throat" in Spanish to bring with me to the farmacia. I get there, and attempt about 2 of them before I just hand him the paper. He looked at it and then stared confusedly at me. Apparently he had never heard of strep throat before? So I stared back at him for about 30 seconds, until I finally said (in very basic Spanish) "There is bacteria" and I pointed at my throat. A look of recognition came into his face and he said "Oooh, bacteria! So you want Amoxicillin!" Success! So I got 8 days worth of the Amox for only 5.50 Euros. After the 2nd day I felt almost 100% better, but I'm still really looking forward to coming home to a health care system that speaks my language.

Last Sunday Brynna and I went into Madrid. First, we met up with the Spanish family that one of Brynna's friends stayed with when they came in high school. Then we saw another one of her Spanish friends. Everyone was extremely nice, and it was definitely a good time. We ate a ton of food and talked for hours, basically. The family we met up with bought a bunch of tapas for all of us, and through their persuasion, and my not wanting to seem rude, I tried (the tiniest piece of) fried calamari! Surprisingly not too bad, though the texture was pretty off-putting for me.

Today we got to basically skip both of our classes to go to an outdoor market. We were supposed to answer a questionnaire, which took about 10 minutes, and then for an hour we just shopped. I got some scarves for 2 Euros, which we're pretty sure everything was so cheap because it was all sketchily obtained... one of our questions was to ask people where their merchandise was from, and all of them mumbled incoherently and walked away. Still, it was a fun market, and hopefully next Tuesday we'll have time to go back one more time.

Also, today we booked an appointment for 5 of us to go to the Madrid Arab baths next Monday!! I could not be more excited!

Hasta luego
